Why I Switched To Squarespace from WordPress

At the time of writing this post, it’s been a couple of years since I switched to Squarespace. Even now it makes me laugh. Pre-switch, I was a diehard Wordpress user. Wordpress was the best and I was sticking to it like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

So What Made Me Switch To Squarespace? Good Question!

Highlights:

  • I needed a change and craved simplicity.

  • I was tired of wasting time updating plugins and managing my website.

  • I wanted minimum barriers standing between me and hitting that publish button.

  • I realised while Wordpress may be the best for many, Squarespace was best for me and my specific needs.

Switching To Squarespace from Wordpress

2017 was a big transitional year for me. I was very much ‘stuck’ in my business, I was frustrated and I started to feel like a slave to my website. I was spending so much time updating it. When I wasn’t dodging hack attempts, I was constantly down a rabbit hole looking for themes, plugins and customisations to improve my site. Talk about a one-way ticket to procrasti-nation.

Then 2018 came around and I decided to sign up for a 14-day free Squarespace trial. My intention was to play around with ideas and layouts that I could then adopt on my Wordpress site.

I had used and set up Squarespace sites in the past so it wasn’t as if it was new to me but this time, it felt new. As I started to set up the site, I realised it was far more limited than Wordpress but it was also so much easier to use. It felt clean. It felt simple. It felt right.

My lesson… less is more. My blessing… I had found the answers to my frustration.

Hi Squarespace.

Switching for Good

Since then, I’ve switched all of my client’s websites over to Squarespace and I’ve build new clients several more. Now they are experiencing the joys of managing their own websites without the overwhelm or need for a website developer every time they need to make an update.

I share this with you because maybe you’re on the fence about Squarespace. Perhaps, you too are a hardcore Wordpress (or other platform) user but something about Squarespace has peaked your interest.

If so, I wrote this article with you in mind. My intention is not to convince you to switch but rather to provide you with some insight into my experience, the benefits of Squarespace and why it might be a good fit for you.

Key Benefits of Squarespace

  • It's user friendly (ANYONE can use it)

  • It's super affordable and all inclusive.

  • You have real support from real people.

  • Your website is guaranteed to be beautiful (well, almost!).

  • Squarespace is compatible on all devices.

The value of all those blog posts you are yet to publish is zero.

01. Squarespace Is User-Friendly

You don’t need to be a web developer or tech-savvy at all to create your website. Anyone can do it.

On the back end, Squarespace offers a drag and drop platform where you can see how your site looks as you build it. They have a number of layouts, content blocks and integrations that you can pull in and place how you’d like. No coding required!

If you need to change or edit something, you can do so with ease.

When it comes to settings and changing elements of the design, you can simply click on the style editor, select the element you’d like to change and it will bring all the options available on the left navigation bar.

02. Squarespace Creates Beautiful Websites

If you’re not a designer, it can be difficult coming with a beautiful website that is going to engage your customer’s attention immediately.

All Squarespace template themes are aesthetically pleasing, they make it really easy to create a stunning website that is visually attractive to your customers.

53% of mobile users abandon sites that take over 3 seconds to load. When you have less than 3 seconds to retain your customer’s attention, this is a big deal.

Your website is like a storefront. It should invite your customers in.

You’re creating an experience, an atmosphere and an emotional connection that encourages them along the buyer’s journey.

Having an array of beautiful Squarespace templates that you can select, customise and personalise allows you to attract, engage and delight your customers as soon as they land on your site.

03. Squarespace Is Less Bulky And Time Consuming

Squarespace isn’t the most flexible platform in terms of features you can add to it. It’s not like WordPress where it can seem like there’s a plugin for everything.

For the super tech savvy, this might seem like a negative. However, for the bootstrapped small business owner, this is a huge positive.

For most, everything you need is within the platform. You don’t have to find domain providers, hosting solutions, themes, an email provider and a ton of different plugins to make it work. It’s all-inclusive.

The integrations available work seamlessly and they are incredibly easy to use. You no longer have to spend hours trying to understand code or technology nor do you have to sacrifice your already limited time in trying to maintain a site.

04. Squarespace Offers Support 24/7

With Squarespace, you’re never alone.

Your site won’t break and you aren’t going to see hacker attempts every other week. If you know the struggle, this alone might be enough reason to switch.

However, should you find yourself with any question or issue in creating your site, Squarespace has your back!

Not only do they have an extensive FAQ section with detailed tutorials, Squarespace offers email and live chat support. They are right there to help you whenever you need.

05. Compatible On All Devices

Let’s face it, we are all glued to our phones 24/7. It’s the world at our fingertips. As a business owner, this means having a mobile responsive website is no longer a competitive advantage, it’s essential. According to Wolfgang Digital’s KPI Report 2019, 53% of traffic comes from mobile devices.

Squarespace is compatible on all devices so you can rest assured that when your next potential customer pulls up your website on mobile or tablet, your website will look just as good and in some cases, better!

What I really like is that Squarespace allows you to adjust and edit your settings on mobile so you can ensure it’s an enjoy experience for mobile visitors.

06. Squarespace Is Affordable

Before you commit to purchasing, Squarespace offers a 14-day free trial to really get inside and see how it all works.

When you do decide to become a customer, Squarespace is extremely affordable with pricing plans starting out at just $12/month when paid annually. If you look at everything included with this such as your domain, hosting, theme template, free email for a year, your SSL certificate and multiple integrations, this is a great option for any business owner.

You’re not locked into any plan either. You can easily upgrade, downgrade or switch between billing plans right from the navigation bar on the left.

Psst… I see you, elephant in the room: While Wordpress is free, you still have the hidden costs of your domain, email, hosting etc. which can all add up very quickly.

You can find out more about Squarespace Pricing Plans here.

Squarespace really does a great job of providing an easy solution for business owners looking to create a beautiful site without the headache.

It’s not for everyone. It’s not for advanced coding professionals who seek to customize a site and require advanced SEO functionalities.

It’s for the business owners looking to create a beautiful, functioning, easy to use website with minimal work, simplicity and support.

I hope this insight has provided some clarity as to whether Squarespace is right for you. If you’re still on the fence, I highly recommend you take up the 14-day free trial. Try it out. See what you think. And if you do, let me know how you get on. I hope you love it as much as I do.
